Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up. Dr. Marmor, who chaired the Academy’s screening guidelines committee, said the goal in Plaquenil screening is to catch changes at a very early stage when there’s just a minimal amount of loss of vision. “Then, when you stop the drug, the damage won’t progress enough to cross the fovea and affect reading vision.” Chloroquine CQ and hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil HCQ have been used for many years, initially for the treatment of malaria but now more commonly for the treatment of inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus 1. It is now considered for new disease applications in diabetes, heart disease and adjunct cancer therapies 2.

  3. The only thing I can think is that when you stop the plaquenil quickly one might have a flare that occurs "slam bam". If you taper off the flare may come anyway but maybe it would be slower and more mild. Did the doc mention going on another drug if you find that you need it.

I'm aware that I need regular eye tests on hydroxychloroquine and my consultant did briefly mention it (very briefly! I rang up her secretary to ask which test I needed at the opticians and she said it was the same one as for glaucoma with the little puff of air but reading around on here that doesn't sound true...
