Right now I am on 5-10mg of Prednisone, depending on how I feel that day, 200mg of Plaquenil twice a day, 15mg/week of Methotrexate and 800mg of Ibuprofen. This medication combo does keep my Pericarditis somewhat under control, but I still have pain and have to sleep sitting up every night! In a recent preliminary report, 21 colchicine was tested as the initial treatment for the first episode of acute pericarditis in order to prevent recurrences. This unblinded, randomised trial involved 60 patients who received either 800 mg/6–8 hours of aspirin for 7–10 days with gradual tapering over 2–3 weeks. Cardiac tamponade is treated with a procedure called pericardiocentesis, in which a needle or a tube, called a catheter, is inserted into the chest wall to remove excess fluid in the pericardium. This relieves pressure on the heart. With constrictive pericarditis, the only cure is surgery known as a pericardiectomy to remove the pericardium. Hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil, chloroquine Aralen, and quinacrine Atabrine are medications that were originally used to prevent or treat malaria. However, during World War II it was also found that these medications were effective in treating the symptoms of lupus. Acute episodes of pericarditis typically last a few weeks, but future episodes can occur. Some people with pericarditis have a recurrence within months after the original episode. When a bacterial infection is the underlying cause of pericarditis, you'll be treated with antibiotics and drainage if necessary. Hospitalization and procedures
