  1. Chloroquine ovarian cancer

It is very famous (for its effectiveness) rather infamous (for its characteristic bitter taste), I still remember during my childhood back in India, elders used to threaten kids that if they won’t sleep in bed equipped with mosquito nets, they would have to eat chloroquine, and all kids out of fear for chloroquine rather malaria itself, would immediately agree to go to bed under the net (which they otherwise did not like normally). Anyways, in last few decades because of emerging chloroquine-resistant malaria parasites, chloroquine was almost forgotten and researchers started to look for other more effective and less toxic drugs to treat and prevent malaria.

Antimalarial drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine could find another use as cancer treatments, according to a new clinical study published in ecancermedicalscience. Aug 19, 2014 Where and How Chloroquine Fights Cancer. Chloroquine is an antimalaria drug that also suppresses tumor growth and metastasis. Chloroquine neutralizes the pH of intracellular compartments, thereby disrupting the endosomal trafficking and lysosomal function. Whereas chloroquine impairs autophagy and proliferation in tumor cells, Maes et al.

Autophagy (from Greek auto-oneself, phagy-to eat) is a process of self-cannibalization which is dependent on the presence of autophagosomes, autolysosomes, as well as an intact nucleus in the cell. It is only last couple of years that chloroquine got sudden attention especially among biologists when cancer biologists noticed its role as an inhibitor of autophagy.

Chloroquine enters the red blood cell, inhibiting the parasite cell and digestive vacuole by simple diffusion. Chloroquine then becomes protonated to CQ2+, as the digestive vacuole is known to be acidic pH 4.7; chloroquine then cannot leave by diffusion. Inhibiting autophagy could starve these dormant cancer cells. Drugs that block autophagy, such as chloroquine, can kill dormant human ovarian cancer cells and delay outgrowth of dormant ovarian cancer grafts. While chloroquine has been used to treat malaria, it can cause adverse side effects including decreased vision. Realizing that profuse activation of autophagy may contribute to pancreatic tumor growth, researchers designed an experiment in which they planned to treat the pancreatic cancer cell lines with Chloroquine, already known as inhibitor of autophagy. As a control, chloroquine was also used to treat normal cell lines with low expression of autophagy.

I've been sick with a cold and my symptoms are getting worse. I would seek help when I felt bad, they would blame it on stress or something, I would get to feeling better and back off.
