It may have both an anti-spirochaete activity and an anti-inflammatory activity, similar to the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. And caution is required if patients have certain heart conditions, diabetes, psoriasis etc.

Plaquenil is the brand name for the prescription drug hydroxychloroquine. It's used to treat and prevent malaria infection, and to reduce symptoms and progression of autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and others. Rheumatoid arthritis is a chronic disorder for which there is no known cure. Fortunately in the last few years, a shift in strategy toward the earlier institution of disease modifying drugs and the availability of new classes of medications have greatly improved the outcomes that can be expected by most patients. I was started on 200 mg BID so a 400 mg dose daily. I have not had any issues with my Plaquenil and I am thankful because it has helped so very much with the joint pain as I am not able to take NSAIDS due to my kidneys. I have not been 100% since before the worst of it all, but I have many better days where the joint pain is quite minimal.

The most serious adverse effects affect the eye, with dose-related retinopathy as a concern even after hydroxychloroquine use is discontinued. The most common adverse effects are a mild nausea and occasional stomach cramps with mild diarrhea.

  6. I'm just a little confused. Why am I taking Plaquenil, which does help tremedously BTW, if I don't have RA or Lupus. Ideas? Thanks! V. P. S. I also take meds for high bp, asthma and high cholesterol. I can't take NSAIDs because the first rheum I saw years ago messed up my stomach when he told me to take 2400 mg of Ibuprofen for a year.

It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis, prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability. Plaquenil is VERY dangerous if the patient has kidney and liver injuries/insufficiencies. so this is why the damage to this patient's eyes seems to start at day one - immediate chest pains and vision disturbances.

What about Plaquenil and Macular Degeneration? - Inspire Aug 16, 2012 I am newly "diagnosed", though still waiting for it to be official. Haha! Anyway I was diagnosed with dry macular degeneration 7 years ago. A recent exam showed it has worsened. I have also seen 3 rheumatologists, and 2 of them say I should take Plaquenil and the risk of damage to my macula is not big enough to not take the Plaquenil. One.

Stopping plaquenil. DailyStrength Hi honey, YES.stopping plaquenil for a couple of days can cause symptoms to arise or get worse.needs to be taken exactly as prescribed. Twice a day, every day. Missing one dose wont make a major difference but skipping more then one, or days absolutely can.
