One such commonly used medication for dermatologic and rheumatologic inflammatory conditions is hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), a chloroquine derivative. It is used to treat many diseases including malaria, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus.

Plaquenil hydroxychloroquine is in a class of drugs called disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, which are used to decrease inflammation, pain and joint damage. While today it is used to treat autoimmune conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, it was originally used as an anti-malaria drug. My floaters started well befoe I went on Plaquenil. deleted_user 05/15/2008 I have one in the left eye that looks like a strand of eye doctor said they are nothing to worry about and that they increase with age. Many eye problems in patients with lupus originate from the drugs doctors use to treat lupus itself. Three groups of medications prescribed for lupus patients are immunosuppressive drugs such as methotrexate and mycophenolate, antimalarials such as hydroxychloroquine Plaquenil®, and steroids.

It is imperative that patients and physicians are aware of and watch for this drug’s ocular side effects. Retinal toxicity from hydroxychloroquine is rare, but even if the medication is discontinued, vision loss may be irreversible and may continue to progress.

Hi I have been on PLaquenil for about 3 months and have been having floaters esp when out in the sun, the Dr says my eyes are ok. I was just wondering if anyone else had this and if it went away aith time. Thanks a lot. - Thanks I appreciate it. I just got a prescription for steroid drops, so I hope it helps, thanks! Just wondering if anyone on plaquenil has experienced getting more floaters, light sensitivity or any other effects on the eyes, because I think that is what is starting to happen to me now that I have been on it for 10 months? Is it possible that it can start affecting the eyes more as time goes on? Any feedback would be great?
