The study is based on acyclovir and hydroxychloroquine sulfate the active ingredients of Acyclovir and Plaquenil, respectively, and Acyclovir and Plaquenil the brand names. Other drugs that have the same active ingredients e.g. generic drugs are not considered. Aug 14, 2017 Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that is treated with a variety of medications, including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs, and disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs, or DMARDs. Many of these medications can cause elevated liver enzymes and liver complications.

She cut my dose in half (100 mg) and that has partially helped the symptoms. A week ago I asked if there was anything we could do and she stated that this was the only treatment pill option.

Plaquenil can cause serious side effects when used in high doses for chronic diseases such as RA over the long term. The New Zealand Dermatological Society recommends that to decrease the risk of retina damage, no more than 200mg of Plaquenil should be taken a day, and a dose of 400mg per day should be taken no longer than a few weeks. Plaquenil has never raised my liver enzymes and I have been on it for six years. The only time my ALT and AST were elevated when I was taking too much iron supplements for my anemia. Once I stopped those, the enzymes went back to normal. For awhile I was on methotrexate and had to go in every month to have my liver checked. I hated injecting myself every week, but that is what it took to feel better. I have been very blessed that I no longer have to take it. I guess that is why I am such a big fan of the plaquenil, it is so much milder than the methotrexate.
