It can decrease the pain and swelling of arthritis. It may prevent joint damage and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

Rheumatoid arthritis RA, the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, can lead to significant pain, disability, and deformity, and is a multisystem autoimmune disorder. The hallmark of this disease, erosive joint destruction, results from unchecked synovial inflammation, which can damage articular cartilage and bone, with resultant loss of joint function. I was prescribed plaquenil for Sjogrens about 5 years ago by my rheumatogist. I too was afraid of the side effects and didn't realize that the disease would worsen, so I just didn't take the plaquenil. Two years later I began having pericarditis attacks and wound up in the hospital. Plaquenil Withdrawal Saturday was a week since I stopped taking Plaquenil, aka Hydroxychloroquine, per my doctor’s instructions, and I think I am going through some form of withdrawal. I took the drug as a treatment for sarcoidosis and one of the side effects is a reduction in white blood cells, which is what has happened to me.

Today, it is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, some symptoms of lupus, childhood arthritis (or juvenile idiopathic arthritis) and other autoimmune diseases. Hydroxychloroquine is in a class of medications that was first used to prevent and treat malaria.

Hi honey, YES.stopping plaquenil for a couple of days can cause symptoms to arise or get worse.needs to be taken exactly as prescribed. Twice a day, every day. Missing one dose wont make a major difference but skipping more then one, or days absolutely can. Stop taking the medicine and call your doctor if your symptoms worsen or don't improve. Plaquenil and Children Plaquenil can be dangerous to children, who are particularly sensitive to the drug. Plaquenil is a 6-weeker as far as the benefits are concerned, but it would be more dangerous to stop if you spend a lot of time outside and if this were the summer. If you're gonna experiment, I went off it cold turkey as it didn't hurt to do it that way, but you better get back on before the summer or you could experience a flare-up.
